Hemp Lime as a CO₂ Sink
Hemp lime, a mixture of hemp shives and a lime-based binder, stands out as the top contender. Industrial hemp grown annually sequesters approximately 21.1 metric tons of CO₂e per hectare (based on 12 metric tons of dry matter with a 48% carbon content). When processed into hempcrete, it stores this carbon in buildings for decades, creating a temporary carbon sink with a lifespan of at least 60 years. For example, 1 m³ of hempcrete contains about 100 kg of CO₂e in bound carbon (net). This makes hempcrete a climate-positive building material. The standard also introduces carbon sink options, which make future climate benefits tradable following annual verification.
